Sophie and Ursula
This is Sophie. She has two brothers with us, Sam and Sebastien. We are fostering them for 2 weeks for the SPCA. I will post pictures of them soon. It is quite healing to have little sweet creatures running around again. A distraction really, as I am not the biggest cat person. How is it that I live in a house full of them (sigh). Cat-lovers that is, not cats. Dogs are so much cooler.

Good dogs
Originally uploaded by Heartlove
Ursula and Freddy take them every morning and afternoon. Merlin doesn’t seem to grasp the heel concept, but Daisy is right on. She tugs only when she sees another dog, and she likes to make sure that Merlin is still right behind her. They are such good dogs!
Daisy does play rough though with Merlin and we are very alert to getting out of the way and getting things under control so that no one gets hurt. Daisy is still trying to figure out exactly what the cats are. Benjamin doesn’t seem nearly as bothered by her as he is by Merlin. He didn’t like Rufus either. Maybe it is a male thing.
The neighbor’s pit bull dove under our fence to “meet” Daisy up close and personal tonight. She is a very sweet dog, but still a pit bull. (I know, I know, this from a person who adores german shepherds) but I digress. I thought there might be a blood bath, but all they did was sniff and whimper and chase each other’s tail. Keila’s dad had to hop the fence to catch her and I still had Daisy on a leash but she ripped right away from me.
I thought he might be dead meat, but she ran up and sniffed him, tail wagging and it wasn’t until I caught up with her that she started barking at him. No growling, just a deep scary bark, I pulled her back and she was fine. But my heart…
He did ask if we were ‘watching” her (like SPCA fostering) and I said “no, we are keeping her. This is Daisy!”

Merlin
Introducing “Merlin”. He is half golden retriever, half australian shepherd and all sweetheart. His birthday is New Year’s Day so he just turned one. He has adjusted to life in our nutty house quite well. The big cats have been giving him a hard time but he takes it all in stride and they have finally (apparently) decided that he is staying past the normal 2 week SPCA fosters.
We have posted a list of his “words” by the front door so we can all be consistent with his training. Someone has put a lot of work into him and it has paid off. The only major concern stems from his interest in making a break for it out the front door and enagaging in a big game of tag. This is a big problem what with all of the cars whizzing down the street much faster than the posted 25 MPH. This has happened twice and has stopped my heart both times.
We are training him in the backyard, he gets out for a walk a day and we will go to obedience school after basketball season.

We Have Puppies!!
Check out these babies! There are 4, Max, Mike, Molly, Maggie. They are little fur balls and when their tails wag it makes a wierd whooshing sound that terrifies our great big, huge, full grown dogs and reduces them to whimpering and peeing on the floor.
These big babies have no problem with our foster kitties, but the puppies, yikes! We actually have had to reroute the big dogs’ path to the potty via our office door. They will not go out the usual door when the puppies are out. Isn’t that crazy?

This was Jennie
I say this was Jennie, because she is no more. She and her siblings were gently led to rest with Jesus because of a nasty and highly (cat) contagious disease. We took pictures of them just an hour before they were returned to the SPCA (we foster animals to prepare them for adoption) for testing and observation. We fully expected that they would be back in a day or two after medical intervention. (We had thought that they merely were too young and unweaned before we got them). I suggested that the kids take pics “just in case” they didn’t come back. I am so glad that we did.
We got the call a day later that another one had stopped eating and they had all tested positive for the bad ugly disease. The shelter worker called with the bad news as we were gathered in living room. I put her on speaker phone as she told us how they had no choice and how grateful they were that these kitties were loved and in a home for their last few days on earth. We cried, and resolved to do this again, and again; that we would do what we could to bridge animals at the shelter with forever families, here on earth or up in heaven.
